Masonry Mortar Joint Repair
Over time the mortar joints between your bricks deteriorate; this is especially true with the masonry of your chimney. That's because unlike a brick house that's protected with an overhanging roof your chimney is totally exposed to the weather and elements. Bricks are much more weather resistant than mortar which is the reason your mortar joints wear out first. When this happens the necessary repair is to carefully grind out the mortar joints between the brick and re-point them with new mortar.
Using The Correct Mortar
The masonry mud or mortar used to lay the brick is the same material used to re-point the ground out joints between the bricks. But there’s more to it than may think. Mortar can be bought pre-mixed from a big box store, but that’s not going to give us the results we’re looking for. Custom pre-mixing the right combination of mortar, sand and sometimes lime will give us the correct consistency, color and bond that is need for the type of brick or stone we are re-pointing.
Masonry water repellent
Applying a good high-quality water repellant to your masonry is critical in extending the life of your brick and mortar. Once again different water repellants can be bought at big box stores; and while these products are better than no product at all, they do not hold the quality of professional grade chimney water repellant. In fact, we trust our product that we apply to our customer’s chimneys so much that we extend all our masonry work by 2 years when applied after repair.
